This program is only open to current members of the University of Dayton campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity
The University of Dayton’s campus chapter for Habitat for Humanity invites all current members to consider an opportunity to globally expand their perspective of poverty and the challenges surrounding affordable housing not just in our local communities, but in our world. **Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s gateway to serving in more than 40 countries around the world. It gives dedicated Habitat for Humanity volunteers an opportunity to experience an abroad community’s culture, language and social practices while working alongside homeowners and volunteers of all backgrounds, races, and religions.
Habitat’s vision is “A world where everyone has a decent place to live”. Habitat supports sustainable and transformational development in the countries and communities it builds in. Habitat views its work as successful when it transforms lives and promotes positive and lasting social, economic and spiritual change within a community; when it is based on mutual trust and fully shared accomplishment; and when it demonstrates responsible stewardship of all resources entrusted to us. Habitat’s mission beautifully coincides with our values as a Marianist university in connecting learning to leadership and service. Global Village will allow our students to learn and understand the serious challenges in finding affordable housing faced by 1.6 billion of the world’s citizens. Furthermore, it will connect distant communities and form deep bonds through leadership and service while working with dedicated homeowners and international Habitat staff to build homes and hope for families in need.
Below is general information about the type of program we would like to offer a select group of UD H4H members in January 2017 in Costa Rica. Please note: detailed and final information about the trip will be made available during the summer.
About the Program
Travel to Costa Rica and help Habitat for Humanity build homes for families in need of safe, decent and affordable shelter.
This team will stay in friendly Buenos Aires, a city to the south surrounded by truly stunning vistas. As you build, you’ll be welcomed into the community. Try traditional food, learn to live and breathe pura vida, and meet the neighbors whose community you’re helping to improve; explore local sights and encounter the natural beauty of which locals are so proud. This trip is a unique opportunity to experience life inside the culture.
Global Village sends volunteers to build with Habitat for Humanity projects across the world. Get your hands dirty on the work site, meet families whose housing situations have been improved with Habitat’s help, experience the country like an insider and do it all alongside a team of like-minded volunteers. No experience is required! This build is your next step with Habitat to make the world a better place.
Meals and Accommodations
Teams stay at modest, comfortable hotels with two to four people per room. Enjoy a variety of cuisine prepared by locals.
Tasks on the work site
Volunteers will assist with prefabricated construction. Tasks will include digging post holes, a septic hole and drainage ditch; mixing concrete; setting posts; and moving and assembling prefabricated concrete walls.
