Announcement: New York Times Digital Storytelling Opportunity for Study Abroad Students

IIE's Generation Study Abroad Voices Video Challenge

Together with The New York Times in Education, IIE is asking study abroad alumni to join Generation Study Abroad and share their voice. We want to know how study abroad gave you an edge, and what impact it had on your life and the world, and how using The New York Times content helped you. The New York Times provides a vibrant daily record of history in the making, igniting student interest by linking learning to living – serving the ideals of today’s demanding educational aims by spurring critical thinking, increasing national and global awareness and fostering a more informed and engaged citizen.

The Challenge

Please submit a digital story about the impact that study abroad had on you. A successful digital story will highlight an experience abroad that helped you gain new a skill/ quality such as language acquisition, confidence and independence, tolerance, problem solving, global awareness, cross-cultural communication, and so on. Additionally, submissions may showcase motivations for studying abroad, what you did to make it happen, any obstacles you may have overcome, new insights into your identity or ways you engaged your host community.

Eligibility & Parameters

To participate in the contest, individuals must meet the following requirements:
  • Be a U.S citizen or permanent resident
  • Have studied abroad (this includes internships, language study, service learning, faculty-led programs) or are currently studying abroad.
  • Be available to attend the IIE Summit on Generation Study Abroad on October 1-2, 2015.
  • Parameters for submitting digital stories include:
    • Story length should be between 1 and 3 minutes long.
    • The story can be submitted in English or in other languages. If submitting in a language other than English, the video must be subtitled in English.
    • Do not use material (especially music) that is subject to copyright fees. Check out Creative Commons, a system, built upon current copyright law, which allows you to legally use “some rights reserved” music, movies, images, and other content—all for free.
  • Individuals can submit a digital story that they previously submitted to or created for other contests or purposes, but need to make sure that entering this contest is in line with the terms and conditions of the previous contests.
  • Submissions must contain full name, country of destination, year, home institution, program (if applicable), and current occupation
*IIE’s Generation Study Abroad Voices Video Challenge is open to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 years of age or older. Employees of the Institute of International Education, Inc. (IIE) and their immediate family (spouse, parent, sibling or child and their respective spouses, regardless of where they reside) and persons living in the same household of such employees, whether or not related, are not eligible to enter or win.
Select videos that successfully demonstrate the impact of study abroad will be highlighted on YouTube during the submission period.

What is Digital Storytelling?

Digital storytelling is a modern take on the tradition of oral storytelling and often combines video, art, voice to tell a particular point of view or experience. IIE and The New York Times in Education are interested in stories that tell the audience about the impact that study abroad had on you.

A successful digital story will highlight an experience abroad that helped you gain new a skill/ quality such as language acquisition, confidence and independence, tolerance, problem solving, global awareness, cross-cultural communication, and so on. Additionally, submissions may showcase motivations for studying abroad, what you did to make it happen, any obstacles you may have overcome, new insights into your identity or ways you engaged your host community.

Benefits

Two winning stories will be selected and featured on The New York Times in Education and IIE’s Generation Study Abroad websites.

Additionally, the winners will receive:
  • iPad
  • $1,000 cash prize
  • A trip to Washington, D.C. to attend the IIE Summit on Generation Study Abroad on October 1- 2, 2015 as a “Generation Study Abroad Voices” Ambassador

Ten (10) Runner-up videos will be selected and will:
  • Be featured on IIE’s Generation Study Abroad website
  • Receive a certificate of appreciation from IIE and The New York Times in Education
Selection Criteria

Winning videos will be selected based on how best applicants demonstrate how study abroad made an impact on them personally and professionally and on their communities. Successful videos should demonstrate a real way that study abroad changes lives and serve as an inspiration for other students to study abroad. Specifically, digital stories should:

Have a narrative story that demonstrates impact of study abroad. A story should share a specific memory from abroad. Each story should have a background, climax, and resolution.

Tip: Writing and editing the script before filming is the best way to produce a quality story.
  • Videos must include reference to The New York Times content.
  • Be purposeful and engaging to audience (primary audience is college students)
  • Go beyond “it was great” and provide depth to your story.
  • Show evidence of professional/personal growth. Bring your experience “alive” through images, music and color and movement.
